Mental Well-Being in the Workplace

More than 80% of U.S. workers experience at least one symptom of a mental health challenge, and about two-thirds say that their mental health interferes with their ability to work.

But workers aren’t getting the help they need.

Less than half of adults with a mental illness receive care, and 8 in 10 workers say that shame and stigma prevent them from seeking treatment.

Employers have a critical opportunity to take action.

Over 9 in 10 workers expect their employer to help manage mental health challenges.

Love, Your Mind — a campaign created by Huntsman Mental Health Institute and the Ad Council — aims to reduce stigma, break down cultural barriers, and inspire people to make taking care of their mental health a priority. Through simple messaging and easy-to-use tools, the campaign helps people recognize their emotions and understand how to care for themselves.

In the workplace, the Love, Your Mind campaign helps leaders like you support employees in positive, affirming ways and encourage them to find their unique path to mental health.

The Business Case for Addressing Mental Health at Work

Employers have a big impact on workers’ mental health.

Your employees need you to create a supportive environment. And, in turn, you need a healthy workforce to build a strong, innovative business. When your team members understand their emotions and care for themselves, they’re better able to show up and give their best.

Strong mental health supports strong teams

Employees who feel like their employer cares about their well-being are five times more likely to advocate for their organization and 69% less likely to look for a new job.

Healthy minds are good for business

Employers see a $4 return for every $1 invested in mental health support and treatment for employees.

Benefits make a difference

75% of employees say they use skills learned in therapy every week.

How To Use This Guide

Based on the Love, Your Mind campaign, this site gives you tools and resources to help you communicate with your employees, connect them with the care they need, and support them on their unique path to positive mental health. You’ll learn to:

1. Spot Signs of Mental Health Challenges

Often, people don't recognize when their mental health needs attention. They might think that feeling overwhelmed is just part of life or that they're supposed to "push through" their feelings. You can help team members recognize that positive mental health empowers them to show up for their families, friends, coworkers, and themselves.

2. Connect Employees to Resources and Care

Sometimes we need help but don’t have the words to express it. Other times, we may have an idea of what we need but don’t know what resources are available or how to access care. Every employee’s mental health journey is their own — but you can help them find a path forward that fits their unique needs.

3. Build a Culture of Mental Well-Being

Mental health isn’t a journey we take alone; we all need support from the people around us. As an employer, you can create a culture that helps team members connect with each other, with their community, and with the tools they need to thrive.

The Love, Your Mind campaign, from Huntsman Mental Health Institute and the Ad Council, offers inspiration, community and educational resources to encourage people across the U.S. to be more open and proactive when it comes to their mental health. The Love, Your Mind Employer Guide and Toolkit was developed in partnership with the Health Action Alliance, the country’s largest employer network operating at the intersection of business and public health.
